Sweet Peaches On My Mind.
Warm afternoons on the patio, Madeleine Peyroux playing on the Jambox, a crisp glass of pinot gris and this wonderfully wonderful peach mozzerella salad with fresh basil from my windowsill garden. This sweet, savory summer salad is simply sublime (yes, that is 6 S’s – that’s how yummy this salad is!). Found on Real Simple via MWM (My Wonderful Mom who adores peaches) and shared with you here on julsjuls. I’m pretty sure you’ll thank me for passing this along…

What Goes In

  • 3 ripe peaches
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn into small pieces or chopped
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Put It All Together

Cut each peach into 6 to 8 wedges, then cut each wedge in half crosswise. You can either peel them (my preference) or keep the skin on.

In a large bowl, combine the peaches, basil, and mozzarella. Drizzle with the oil, sprinkle with the salt and pepper, and toss. You can cover and refrigerate the salad for up to several hours and it’s still quite yummy. Serve cold or at room temperature (I prefer it cold!).

Add extra savory with some shaved Italian prosciutto, then serve over baby arugula – an entire meal!

Or, you can even serve it with a drizzle of balsamic, caprese style. The sour of the balsamic with the sweet peach juice is awfully tasty and crusty-bread-sop-up worthy!

My Heart Needs To Feel Paper.
I love my Kindle and my iPad, I do. Endless sources of reading at your digital fingertips, at a moments download – it’s an instant gratification luxury. But there’s something about print that is viscerally lovely. I love the feel of paper between my fingers as each page turns. And photos? Our digital slide show of family pictures always makes me smile, but have you ever noticed you look at a photo much longer if it’s printed? I think that’s because as satisfied as our brains are by electronic imaging, our hearts will always love the permanence of print.

Boring patio, demanding a bit of color. Enter hanging fuchsia baskets (thank you Costco – who knew?!). Two lovely repeatedly blooming “dancing ladies” fuchsias now adorn our patio, making it summertime beautiful. But even better, we are now regularly visited by hummingbirds. They come swooping down, in search of sweet nectar. Smaller than I remember, but just as wondrous. They are a feat of nature, with lightening fast wings and tiny poking beaks. Can’t decide what I enjoy more, the blooms or the birds…

Ice Cream Yummies.
As a kid, ice cream was one of my favorite treats. I remember coming home from school on a hot afternoon and sneaking a triple scoop of vanilla perched on cake cone, then eating it fast so it didn’t drip — or so I didn’t get caught over-indulging. Now as an official grown-up, managing over-indulgence seems necessary, but that doesn’t mean I have to give up those icy, creamy treats completely. Does it?IceCream_coneMy four favorite temptations…

1. Baskin Robbins “Gold Medal Ribbon” — My all time favorite, most wonderful of all wonderful frozen treats. B&R mixes vanilla and chocolate with a swirl of caramel ribbon deliciousness. Oh my, yes.

2. Ben & Jerry’s “Mint Chocolate Cookie” — Peppermint ice cream with chocolate sandwich cookies (bits of oreo cookie). Think frozen Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies in an ice cream. Squeee!

3. Haagen-Dazs “5” Vanilla Bean — I have no idea how 5 simple ingredients can taste so good, but HD makes this pint of perfection something special!

4. Friendly’s Classic Chocolate — Friendly’s isn’t available everywhere, but this chocolate treat wins tastes tastes over and over again. No glitz, extras or snazzy branding, just amazing creamy yumminess.

Psssst… there are cones right over there on the counter. You grab the scooper, I’ll dash to the freezer!

Do you believe in luck?

Some say he was born lucky, things always in his favor. Some say he earned his station in life, worked hard for his good fortune. Luck, destiny, fate… makes me wonder. Makes me wonder if our lives are pre-destined or if we really do have a choice for our path. When standing at crossroads a voice whispering, pressing, luring… What’s next? Feeling lucky?
